Domestic Violence Awareness:

Topic of the month: Domestic Violence Awareness

Description: “Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another.” 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime. On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines nationwide receive over 20,000 calls.

Why we chose this topic:

It is no mistake that #MeToo is a movement, not just a hashtag or a headline. Whether it is Brett Kavanaugh or Dr. George Tyndall, we have an obligation to recognize the pervasiveness of sexual violence in our campuses and our culture. After all, domestic violence does not simply happen; it stems from the same toxic mindset that allows the Weinsteins and Cosbys of the world to abuse and intimidate their victims. Our goal this month is to draw awareness to victims of domestic violence, and to broader, all-too-necessary conversations about sexual violence. Conversations are where the change begins.

Mission: The Insight Project starts focused, interactive, meaningful conversations about the issues that matter. Drawing from the empathy and experiences of the people we interview, we reframe anger into understanding and hopelessness into inspiration.
