Veterans and Military Family Awareness Month

Description:
Nearly 7 percent of the U.S. population are veterans. These veterans are supported by more than 15 million spouses and military families. Yet veterans and military families are often oversimplified, demonized, and misunderstood. Our goal this month is to provide an accurate representation of the experience of participating in ROTC, serving in the military, returning from service, and supporting a family and a partner who has served or is currently serving.

Why we chose this topic?
Honoring veterans and military families is about respecting and appreciating their individual bravery and sacrifices; it is not the same as honoring the war(s) they fought in. Millions of Vietnam veterans were ignored and disrespected out of frustration towards the war they fought in--today, 4 in 5 of those veterans report chronic PTSD symptoms. And, fully 71 percent of civilians say they have little to no understanding of the military experience despite a strong appreciation for the military. With this in mind, it is important to focus on veterans, active duty members, and military families, to shed light on their experiences and to combat stigmatization and provide support.

Some statistics about veterans and military families:
  • 64% of those who served in combat feel disconnected from civilian life
  • Fifty-three percent of military spouses were significantly impacted and/or did not pursue education or employment because of lack of childcare availability
  • 90 percent of military families feel the general public does not understand the sacrifices they and their service members have made

Project Insight starts focused, interactive, and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter. Drawing from the empathy and experiences of the people we interview, we reframe anger into understanding and hopelessness into inspiration.
